Winemaker Norbert Bauer relies on water-retaining granulate POLYSORB

9. Sep 2024 | Viticulture

In the video, winegrower Norbert Bauer demonstrates the use of the water-storing granulate POLYSORB (hydrogel) in his vineyard to optimally protect his vines from periods of drought. POLYSORB has the ability to store up to 400 times its own weight in water and release it to the plants as required during dry periods.

The granulate is introduced into the soil in a simple but effective way. Two furrows are made near the rows of vines using a subsoiler. At the same time, the granulate is spread linearly into these furrows using a granulate spreader. This allows POLYSORB to penetrate directly into the root zone of the vines, where it stores the water and makes it continuously available to the vines.

This method shows how traditional viticultural methods can be combined with modern technology to make wine production more sustainable. The use of POLYSORB offers an innovative solution for viticulture, especially in view of increasing dry periods due to climate change. Norbert Bauer is thus setting an example for future-oriented viticulture and securing yields in challenging climatic conditions.
