Innovation in viticulture: the use of Polygrain at Knoll

11. Jul 2024 | Viticulture

The Knoll winery is one of the most influential wineries in the Wachau. The family began bottling their wines in bouteilles back in the 1950s. The iconic baroque label of St. Urban has adorned its bottles since 1962.

Today, the Knoll family cultivates 16 hectares, including well-known vineyards such as Kellerberg, Loibenberg, Pfaffenberg and Schütt. These vineyards provide the grapes for their characteristic Rieslings and Veltliners, which impress with their clarity, precision, minerality and structure and often only develop their full potential after many years. Knoll also enriches its range with Muskateller, Gelber Traminer and, since 1988, the almost annual Vinothek bottlings. Sweet Auslese and Prädikat wines are also among their specialties.

Since this year, the Knoll winery has been using an innovative technique in its vineyards: polygrain. This water-retaining granulate is used in very dry locations to improve the water balance of the vines and ensure the quality of the wines. Polygrain stores large quantities of water and releases it to the plants as required. This keeps the vines well supplied even during dry periods. It also promotes sustainable vineyard management and improves the soil structure.

With this new method, the Knoll winery is demonstrating its commitment to a sustainable future in viticulture.
