Why irrigation alone is often no longer enough

When soils dry out over long periods of time, a problem arises that is becoming increasingly apparent in agriculture, viticulture and horticulture: Water can often no longer be absorbed properly. Instead of penetrating deep into the soil and reaching the root zone, it runs off the surface or quickly evaporates again.

Especially after long periods of drought, many soils lose their ability to absorb and store moisture efficiently. Even intensive irrigation often does not have the desired effect because the water does not reach where the plants actually need it.

This is particularly critical during periods of high temperatures and low rainfall. Plants come under stress more quickly, while at the same time the amount of watering required increases significantly. A decisive factor is therefore the ability of the soil to retain moisture for longer and make water available specifically in the root area. Water-storing granules such as Polygrain support precisely this approach: they store water directly in the root zone and help to retain moisture in the soil for longer. As a result, the soil dries out more slowly and at the same time remains more receptive to further water.

Especially under increasingly dry climatic conditions, efficient water storage in the soil is becoming more and more important – not only for the water supply itself, but also for long-term soil function and plant development.
