Practice meets research: Two days of innovation at Green Legacy

10. Oct 2025 | General

Around 50 partner companies and institutions from forestry, agriculture, research and technology accepted Green Legacy’s invitation to the first major stakeholder and partner event at the Alte Hofmühle in Hollabrunn.

For two days, the focus was on innovative technologies, scientific findings and practical applications – with one common goal: to make agriculture and forestry more resilient and sustainable.

The varied program ranged from machine demonstrations and testimonials from satisfied users to scientific impulses from ongoing research projects.

Science and practice in dialog

The event was opened by Managing Directors Enrique Nacif, Antonio de Vall and Rudolf Bauer; Wei Ma was represented by Rainer Rößlhuber. In exciting presentations, experts showed how research, practice and innovation go hand in hand at Green Legacy:

Muhammad Ahmad, PhD

Postdoc Researcher at the Federal Research Center for Forests (BFW)

Muhammad Ahmad, PhD, presented research findings on the effectiveness of water-storing granules in mitigating drought stress and promoting drought-resilient reforestation.

Priv.-Doz. Dr. Hans Sanden

Institute of Forest Ecology (BOKU Vienna)

Priv.-Doz. Dr. Hans Sanden summarized eight years of field trials in a “Lessons Learned” lecture – from successful applications to less effective methods. He showed which factors significantly influence the success of hydrogel applications.

Dipl.-Ing. Eva Sykacek

Senior Scientist, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Environmental Biotechnology

Dipl.-Ing. Eva Sykacek presented the HydroSheepBoost research project – a cooperation between BOKU Vienna, TU Graz and Green Legacy. The aim is to increase the performance of sheep’s wool as a water reservoir and nutrient source. The integration of Green Legacy technology will make an innovative contribution to the circular economy.

Clemens Gnauer, BSc(WU), MSc

Research Burgenland

Clemens Gnauer presented results from the ongoing viticulture project with Polygrain, which is being carried out jointly with the Center for Energy Transition and the Hahnekamp-Sailer winery. Over a period of 34 weeks, the effect of the water-storing granulate on soil moisture and water availability of the vines was investigated – with clear positive effects for sustainability and drought resilience in viticulture.

Hans Koch

Farmer and grassland expert from Germany

Hans Koch spoke about the effects of climate change on agriculture and vegetation phases. He highlighted the importance of sustainable soil and grassland management and gave an impressive live demonstration of how Green Legacy materials improve soil structure and optimize living conditions for plants.

Enrique Nacif

Managing Director Green Legacy
Enrique Nacif then explained the scientific basis of the polymers that give Green Legacy’s water-retaining granules their special effect.

“We are very grateful that so many outstanding experts from research and practice are working with us. These collaborations enable us to develop solutions that make agriculture, forestry and urban greening more sustainable and resilient,” says Nacif.

Exchange, technology and innovation

A particular highlight was the round table, where participants engaged in intensive discussions at three stations on the topics of technology, business and science. The subsequent dinner provided ample opportunity for personal exchange and networking.

On the second day, machine demonstrations were given by Andreas Brehm, Managing Director of Vogt, and Wagner, among others, who presented specialized systems for spreading granulates.

Emil Steffek, Managing Director of Baumpflege P&E GmbH, reported on a current project involving municipal buildings in Vienna, where the use of Polygrain and PolYSORB has reduced the mortality rate of urban trees from 20 % to less than 10 %.

At the end, Antonio de Vall, CEO of Green Legacy, summarized the event:

“The diversity of the contributions and the open discussions show the potential of our technologies and our collaborative way of working. Together with our partners, we want to make agriculture more resilient, innovative and sustainable.”

Green Legacy would like to thank all partners, speakers and guests for making this event an important milestone for sustainable agriculture and forestry.
