Green Legacy strengthens urban trees in Barcelona – high-tech against drought stress

In the heart of Barcelona’s urban space, Green Legacy has reached another milestone in its expansion in Spain. In close cooperation with the Barcelona Parks and Gardens Department and the specialist companies Àrbolart Arboricultura and DAS Jardins, highly effective applications of the Polysorb+ hydrogel were carried out this week – precisely applied using the professional deep injection lance from Vogt GmbH (Vogt Geo Injector Fluid).

The aim of the measure was to loosen compacted urban soil in a targeted manner and to bring water and oxygen directly into the root zone. Urban trees in particular are increasingly suffering from drought stress, sealed surfaces and limited aeration of the soil – factors that have a massive impact on their vitality and lifespan.

Soil loosening where it works

The combination of deep loosening, aeration and water input creates new space for growth in the root area. Water can be stored and released again in a controlled manner, oxygen reaches the fine roots and the activity of soil microorganisms is promoted – a key prerequisite for healthy, resistant trees in urban environments.

The applications were carried out in particularly sensitive and highly frequented locations such as the Parc de la Ciutadella, Plaça Catalunya, in Sants-Montjuïc, the Jardins de Miramar and along Avinguda Diagonal.

Protecting historic trees and green heritage

The focus was on particularly valuable, partly historic tree species and individual trees, including lime trees (Tilia spp.), magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora), the beautiful shade tree (Phytolacca dioica) and the holm oak (Quercus ilex). Many of these specimens are classified as unique or solitary trees and have characterized the cityscape of Barcelona for decades.

“Many of these trees are part of the city’s cultural and botanical heritage. Maintaining their vitality is not just a technical task, but a responsibility towards Barcelona’s identity. Green Legacy’s solutions give these trees a real future perspective under the conditions of climate change.”

Growing presence in Spain

Barcelona is part of a growing network of Spanish cities that rely on Green Legacy’s solutions. The hydrogels are also already being used successfully in Madrid, Marbella and Plasencia – with measurable improvements in deep hydration, soil structure and the resistance of urban trees to periods of drought.

Many thanks to the Parks and Gardens Department of the City of Barcelona for their trust in the technology used. Working to preserve the urban tree population of an international reference city is both an incentive and an obligation for us: to develop practical, safe and effective solutions that strengthen urban trees in the long term – and make cities more climate-resilient.
